Lithium Battery Risk Prompts Precautionary Diversion of Passenger Flight
A plane carrying passengers on EasyJet from Egypt to London had to divert to Rome due to a passenger discovering that his power bank was plugged in to charge in a bag that was stowed in the hold of the plane. Even though no fire or other problems occurred, the pilots made the diversion as a precaution since lithium batteries can cause thermal runaway which poses a very big fire risk; the batteries are not allowed to be charged or stored in the hold. The passengers were accommodated in hotels and provided with meals in Rome and left to continue with their travels the following day.
